Summer in the city, dust on the roads and dry sealant in your tyres.

Summer rides are great: warm evenings, dusty roads, long loops, quick city commutes and hopefully something cold waiting after the ride.

But while you are cooling down, your bike is working hard too.

Heat, dust, sweat, sunscreen residue and dry roads can affect your bike more than you think. Especially if you ride tubeless, summer is the time to check your setup regularly.

Tubeless sealant does not last forever

Tubeless sealant, often called tubeless milk, helps seal small punctures while you ride. It is one of the reasons why tubeless setups are so popular for road, gravel and mountain bikes.

But sealant dries out over time. In hot weather, this can happen even faster. Long rides, dusty roads and high temperatures can reduce the amount of active sealant inside your tyres.

And if the sealant is dry, it will not help when you actually need it.

Signs your tubeless setup needs attention:

  • Your tyre loses pressure faster than usual

  • Small punctures no longer seal properly

  • The valve gets clogged

  • You have not refilled the sealant in a while

  • The bike has been sitting unused for some time

Dust and dry chains are not a great combo

Summer also means more dust, sweat and dirt on your bike. Dust sticks to the chain, cassette and derailleur. Sweat and sunscreen residue can build up on the frame and cockpit.

A dirty drivetrain does not just look bad. It wears faster, shifts less smoothly and makes your bike feel less efficient.

A clean bike simply rides better.

Quick summer bike care routine

After dusty, sweaty or longer rides:

  1. Rinse the bike gently with water

  2. Avoid high-pressure washers around bearings, hubs and e-bike parts

  3. Wipe the frame with a soft cloth

  4. Clean the chain and cassette

  5. Let everything dry properly

  6. Apply chain oil or wax

  7. Check tyre pressure

  8. Check or refill your tubeless sealant

Small habits make a big difference.
